Travel marketing in India: what actually works in 2026

By Techsaar, Indore · · 9 min read

The short answer

  • Travel is sold on WhatsApp in India. Your marketing should end in a chat, answered in minutes.
  • Instagram builds trust with real trips and real travellers; ads turn that trust into enquiries.
  • Google Search and SEO catch people who already know where they want to go.
  • A CRM with follow-ups decides how many enquiries become bookings.

Travel and hospitality is Techsaar's biggest niche. Since our first travel client in 2021 we have worked with 16 travel and hospitality brands, from tour operators and pilgrimage specialists to hotels and villas, and built a complete booking platform and CRM for one of them. This is what we have seen work, and what wastes money.

How Indian travellers actually buy

  1. They get inspired on Instagram or YouTube, or by a friend's trip.
  2. They search on Google or ask an AI assistant: "Kashmir package from Indore", "best time to visit Ladakh".
  3. They message two or three agencies on WhatsApp to compare.
  4. They ask questions, negotiate, ask family, and decide days or weeks later.

Most agencies spend on step 1 and lose the customer at steps 3 and 4. The agency that replies first, answers clearly and follows up politely usually wins, even if it is not the cheapest.

1. Instagram: proof, not posters

Travellers want to see that your trips really happen and that people enjoy them. Post reels from actual departures, short traveller testimonials, hotel and room walkthroughs, and day-by-day itinerary videos. A feed of flat promotional posters with prices builds far less trust than a 20-second clip of your group at the destination.

  • Post fixed-departure dates with seats left; urgency is real in group travel.
  • Save itineraries as highlights by destination.
  • Reply to every comment and DM quickly; Instagram is a sales channel, not a notice board.

2. Click-to-WhatsApp ads for enquiries

For travel, ads that open a WhatsApp chat usually beat lead forms. Run them by destination and season, with one clear package and a starting price per ad. Plan seasons early: travellers start looking for winter trips by September and summer holidays by February.

Every chat from these ads must get an answer within minutes, with a few quick questions: travel dates, number of people, departure city and budget. A shared inbox with an instant first reply, such as SaarFlow, lets the whole team answer from one number and shows which ad brought which booking.

3. Google Search ads for high intent

People searching "Kashmir tour package from Indore" already want to buy. Google Search ads on specific destination and departure-city keywords catch them. Keep each ad group tight, send it to a page about that exact package, and add negative keywords like "free", "jobs" and "visa" if you do not sell those.

4. SEO: destination pages that rank

Organic search takes longer but brings enquiries for years. Create one strong page per destination and package, not one page listing everything. Each page should have the itinerary day by day, inclusions and exclusions, best season, how to reach, a starting price and real photos. Add FAQ schema to answer common questions. One of our travel clients reached the top five on Google for "best travel company in Indore" with this approach plus steady social content.

5. Google Business Profile

Travellers check reviews before paying an advance. Keep your profile complete, post updates about upcoming departures, add photos from every trip, and ask every returning group for a review with a direct link.

6. A CRM decides your conversion rate

A travel enquiry needs several touches: the first reply, the itinerary, a call, a revised quote, a reminder before seats run out. When this lives in someone's phone, leads disappear. A simple CRM with stages, owners, follow-up dates and departure-wise tracking changes results more than any ad. For our largest travel client we built exactly this, together with their booking website and admin platform.

StageWhat should happen
New enquiryReply in minutes, ask dates, people, city, budget
Itinerary sentFollow up next day with a call or voice note
QuotedReminder after 2 to 3 days, mention seats left
Advance paidConfirmation, payment receipt, packing list on WhatsApp
After the tripThank you, review request, photo sharing, next trip offer

7. Repeat and referral

Past travellers are your cheapest source of new bookings. Keep them in a broadcast list they agreed to, send them early access to new departures, and reward referrals. A traveller who loved Kashmir is the best salesperson for your Ladakh trip.

What we would stop doing

  • Boosting posters without a clear package, price or call to action.
  • Sending the same broadcast to every contact every week.
  • Running ads to the homepage instead of the specific package page.
  • Judging campaigns by likes instead of advances paid.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best marketing channel for a travel agency in India?

A combination works best: Instagram reels for trust, Click-to-WhatsApp and Google Search ads for enquiries, destination pages for SEO, and a CRM with fast WhatsApp replies and follow-ups to convert enquiries into bookings.

Do Click-to-WhatsApp ads work for travel agencies?

Yes. Indian travellers like to ask questions before booking, so ads that open a WhatsApp chat usually bring better enquiries than lead forms, provided the agency replies within minutes.

When should travel agencies start seasonal campaigns?

Start early. Travellers begin planning winter trips around September and summer holidays around February, so campaigns should go live before the peak search period.

Why does a travel agency need a CRM?

Travel enquiries need several follow-ups before an advance is paid. A CRM with stages, owners and follow-up dates prevents leads from being forgotten and shows which campaigns actually produce bookings.
