The short answer
- For most hotels, the Google Business Profile brings more bookings than the website itself, so fix it first.
- Rank for "hotel near [landmark]" and "[type] in [city]" searches, not just your hotel's name.
- Give every room type and every reason to visit its own page with real photos and prices.
- A fast website with a booking engine turns that traffic into commission-free bookings.
Every booking that comes through an OTA costs a hotel somewhere between 15% and 25% in commission. Every booking that comes from Google straight to your own website costs nothing beyond the payment gateway fee. Hotel SEO is simply the work of making sure that when a traveller searches for a place like yours, they find you, not only your OTA listing.
We work with hotels, villas, homestays and hotel revenue companies across India, and we built a direct-booking engine for a group of ten hotels in Indore. This is the order in which we would fix SEO for any property.
Step 1: Get the Google Business Profile right
When someone searches "hotel in Indore" or "resort near me", Google shows the map pack before any website. That map pack comes from Google Business Profile. For most hotels it is the single biggest source of direct calls and website visits.
- Choose the most accurate primary category: Hotel, Resort hotel, Guest house, Homestay or Villa, not a generic one.
- Use your real name only. Adding keywords to the business name breaks Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
- Fill in check-in and check-out times, amenities, accessibility and every attribute Google offers.
- Upload real photos every month: rooms, bathrooms, view, breakfast, entrance, parking. Profiles with fresh photos get more clicks.
- Link the website button to your own booking page, not to an OTA.
- Turn on messaging or add your WhatsApp so guests can ask before they book.
Step 2: Reviews, and replying to every one
Reviews are both a ranking factor and the thing that makes a guest choose you. Ask every happy guest at checkout, with a QR code at the reception and a short WhatsApp message after the stay. Reply to every review, good and bad, within a day or two. A calm, specific reply to a bad review reassures the next guest more than ten five-star ratings.
Never buy reviews or offer discounts in exchange for them. Google removes them and can restrict the profile.
Step 3: Target the searches guests really make
Very few guests search for your hotel's name until they already know it. They search by place, purpose and type. Build pages around those searches:
| Search type | Example | Page to create |
|---|---|---|
| Near a landmark | hotel near Vijay Nagar Indore | Location page with distances and directions |
| Purpose | wedding venue in Indore | Events or banquet page with capacity and photos |
| Type | pool villa near Indore | Room or villa type page |
| Budget | budget hotel near railway station | Room page with clear price |
| Experience | weekend getaway from Indore | Guide page that leads to your packages |
Step 4: One page per room type
Many hotel websites put every room on one page. Give each room type its own page with its own title, real photos, size, bed type, view, amenities, occupancy and a starting price. These pages rank for specific searches and give Google something clear to show.
Step 5: Speed and mobile
Most hotel searches happen on a phone, often on a slow connection while travelling. Compress images, avoid heavy sliders and video backgrounds, and test the site on a mid-range Android phone. If the page takes more than three seconds, many guests go back to the OTA.
Step 6: Structured data
Add Hotel or LodgingBusiness schema with your address, phone, check-in times, amenities, price range and geo coordinates. Add FAQ schema to a questions section. This helps Google and AI assistants describe your property correctly, which matters more every month as more travellers ask ChatGPT or Gemini for recommendations.
Step 7: A booking engine that actually converts
Ranking is wasted if the guest cannot book. Your website needs live availability, a clear price, offers for booking direct, and a fast payment flow with UPI. A "call us to book" button loses many guests who are ready to pay now.
Step 8: Content that earns links
Write genuinely useful guides about your area: things to do nearby, how to reach you, the best season to visit, local food. Local news sites, travel bloggers and wedding planners link to pages like these, and each link strengthens your rankings.
How long hotel SEO takes
Google Business Profile improvements can show results within weeks. Website rankings for competitive city searches usually take three to six months of steady work. In our experience the hotels that win are not the biggest ones, they are the ones that keep the profile fresh, answer every review and keep the website fast.
